Hello everybody!
With this interview I would like to start series of the new posts about services available for the wedding couples and not only as I believe everyone will find here something interesting.
Who can help you to plan your dream wedding?
where to held the reception?
where to buy beautiful, fresh flowers?
where to take your girl/wife for a dinner?
where to get perfect gift for any occasion?
If you are looking for something specific I did not mention yet let me know!
I hope to give you as many ideas and answers as possible.
For the beginning – Wonderful person, fabulous and unique florist - Terry Cunningham, a South African born floral designer, owner of the Shades of Bloom based in Killorglin, Co. Kerry.
I am so glad that beyond your busy life and advanced pregnancy you’ve got the time to talk with me.
Hello Terry,
What would you say about yourself?
I am free spirited, creative and a perfectionist when it comes to my work. I love nature and what I do for a living!
Why “Shades of Bloom”?
I just loved the name!
How did you start your business?
I moved to Ireland in 2005 from South Africa, there I had a successful flower design business so it was only natural for me to continue doing the same.
I decided to open another floral design business in Ireland. Hence: Shades of Bloom :)
Do you take many enquiries from outside of Kerry, or do you act more locally?
I concentrate mainly on Kerry, I would travel if necessary but it would depend on the individual client requirements.
Is your passion for flowers a heritage?
I grew up as a flower child. My parents are flower farmers in Cape town South Africa. I grew up in the flower industry so It was always the natural path for me to follow.
What is your favorite flower? Why
I can’t say that I have a favorite flower , I love seeing the different flowers coming into bloom in each season. Each one has its own special qualities that make it unique.
What type of flower would you suggest to the wedding couple this month?
Paeonia
- Spring - calla lilies, roses, muscari, hyacinthus, freesia
- Summer - delphiniums, stocks, paeonia, roses, hydrangeas
- Autumn - calla lilies, gerbera, ranunculus, orchids
- Winter - roses, tulips, lilies, orchids
Do you have any flower you never recommend to your clients?
No, I would suggest that they stick to flowers that are in season.
What is your offer for the wedding couple?
I always try to fit each individual budget and taste. I offer a free personal consultation to discuss the couples ideas.
From where do you take inspirations?
Usually from nature, the changing of the seasons. The colours, textures and atmosphere.
How would you describe your style?
I think that my style changes as I gain more experience. I have a definite African influence, I love working with exotic flowers and doing something a bit different to the norm.
What was the most memorable wedding for you?
Probably my own! I did all the flowers for my own wedding. I remember doing all the finishing touches on the morning of the wedding. It was really worth it.
Any challenging event?
In South Africa I did allot of work for government level, conferences etc. The most challenging was probably doing the Nelson Mandela Invitation Golf event.
It ran over a period of 5 days and each day there was an event so I had to come up with new designs for each day on a big scale.
And the last question. If you were a bride to be /not the qualified florist :)/ what would you look for when picking up the florist for your wedding?
I would suggest when you are looking for a florist, try and make sure that you can communicate well with them.
Always ask to see photos of their previous work so you can get an idea of their ability and style.
I would also recommend that you find someone who is open minded and listens to your needs and ideas.
Thanks a lot for your time. Wishing you many clients and beautiful healthy baby :)
